QUESTIONS REGUARDING BANNING
What are the rewards of censorship?
A reward to censorship is it protects kids from seeing things on the internet that are not meant to be seen by kids. Some things are not meant to be seen or read by kids are young people. Not knowing is sometimes a good thing. There are a lot of things out there and even though children may be curios it is the parents place to tell them. The rating on everything from video games to movies to websites in there for a reason and even though it isn't that big of a deal to our society now doesn't mean that some people don't follow those ratings and respect their reasoning for being there.
In what instances would censorship be unacceptable?
In my opinion it would be unacceptable to have it in your older teenagers phone or laptop. I think that is a trust problem because the parents should trust their child by that time to make good decisions and to know the difference between right and wrong. There is a lot of bad things out there but as they mature and become an adult they need to know that you trust them and even if its something like this. Also it might restrict them from being able to use common websites and other things that might not be bad.
Is censorship in schools a bad thing?
In schools? yes I think it should be used but to a certain extent. There's a difference between what an elementary school student would need restrictions on from a high school student. Also where they might block sites that can be used for learning because you might be able to buy one thing on that site that caused it to be blocked.
Is censorship in libraries and government building a good thing?
Yes, if it is available to all of the public then it should be. It might cause an inconvenience for the person using the thing that is censored but if it is available to the public and children have full access there could be a problem. Like I stated earlier children should not have full access to the internet. Some things you could change the settings based on your age but it shouldn't be available to just anybody and everybody.
Are there certain topics that should always be taboo?
It should depend on the age. If it is for a child, yes there are things that should always be censored, but if it is for an adult I don't think so. An adult should be able to read whatever they want, no matter the subject, its one of our freedoms. Things like sex, terrorism, and violence should always be censored for young unless their parent or someone says otherwise.
